Tips for how to select a business or marketing consultant.

How to Select a Consultant

Selecting a consultant to work with is an important decision for your business. Although you have the freedom to terminate any agreement, there is still a considerable investment in time and this is a decision you want to get right. To help you make the right decision around consultant selection here are a few key points that you need to consider.
  1. Experience – make sure you select a consultant that has a breadth of client experience and also has worked inside businesses, to ensure they understand your issues.
  2. Ability – a good consultant needs to have the intellectual ability to understand your business quickly, diagnose the root issues and then recommend a plan to address. Spend time with them to assess their thinking and ability.
  3. Skills & IP – practiced consultants should have clear processes that they use. This IP let’s them both work faster as they are not redesigning the plan each time and also ensures that things aren’t missed.
  4. Associations – who is the consultant is associated with? Where did they go to university, what degrees have they got, what professional groups do they belong to, do they contribute any pro bono time to industry/community groups. Has their work or articles been published?
  5. Relationship – It's really important to develop a good relationship with your consultant. You need to feel that you will get on, trust each other, and be able to have robust debates with your consultant.
  6. Networks – An experienced consultant should have a well developed network of other professionals that they work with and can bring into your business when required.
  7. Results – Don’t be afraid to ask for one or two referees to check the consultants background and the results they have achieved for their clients.
